ActionFTP WindowClippings Add-in: Beta

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

This is the first (and hopefully the last) beta of ActionFTP, an add-in I have written in C# for Kenny Kerr’s WindowClippings - a simple, yet incredible easy and very high-quality screenshot utility for Windows.

Two Important Notes:

  • This is a beta, so I’ve set it to expire in July (just to stop people from using old code that could (but hopefully won’t) contain bugs).
  • You will require a license to use this, as WindowClippings doesn’t allow unregistered users to use add-ins.
  • Update: The current (and newer) versions of WindowClippings no longer require licenses to use add-ins!

Twitter

Saturday, May 17th, 2008

I discovered Twitter a few weeks ago.

It seems far easier and much quicker to keep updated, as (unlike with a blog) I don’t feel I have to write a long post about whatever it is I’m writing about - in fact it limits each "tweet" (the act of sending an update to Twitter) to 140 characters. If your friends/colleagues use Twitter as well, you can "follow" them, which puts all their "tweets" (as well as yours) on one central page for you to keep track of all of them at once.

There are also a vast amount of ways to "tweet" to Twitter - there are huge numbers of GUI clients for Windows, Mac OS (MoodBlast is a good one, and can also update various other sites/statuses at the same time) and Linux, as well as CLI clients for Mac and Linux, add-on/plugin clients for Firefox (my personal favourite is TwitterFox) and other similar apps, and iPhone/iPod Touch (I use Twinkle) applications too. You can also "tweet" on the actual Twitter website, or even using an SMS from your mobile phone!

I’ve added a link to my Twitter to the sidebar, and I may add a small widget to the sidebar as well to show my latest "tweets" at some point.

WordPress 2.5

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

I’ve just finished upgrading to WordPress 2.5 - a very smooth and easy upgrade, thanks to SVN :)

The entire dashboard has been redesigned and is far easier to navigate, looks nicer, and is much less buggy or “quirky” than before. Ozh’s drop-down menu plugin is a nice addition to it though.

There are some pretty screenshots on the 2.5 Sneak Peak post on the official WordPress blog.

Local YUM Mirror

Thursday, April 12th, 2007

I found this great guide which helps create your own local mirror Fedora Core YUM repositories - great if you have several local computers running Fedora, as I do.

I’m mirroring (locally only though, not publicly) the “Core” and “Updates” repo’s - I looked into doing the “Extras” repo too, but that’s nearly 10GB of files! That will have to wait for bigger hard disks… :P

So far I’ve got my laptop and my local Linux server using my local repo, and I’ll set my main pc to use it once I’ve installed Linux on it.

I also installed lighttpd on my local server, running on an alternate port, which should make installing large software packages over the LAN that little bit faster than if I used Apache 2, which runs on the default port. I’d switch to lighttpd as the main web server, but I couldn’t get PHP working well with it the last time I tried.

Lame mIRC Scripts

Thursday, December 28th, 2006

Why do two out of three users on most IRC networks these days have to use a lame script? Each one is more n00by than the last…

WTF does a noob need with a clone scanner?! Noob’s aren’t opers, so they can’t do anything about clones. And a sensible oper uses a plain(-er) mIRC, Xchat, or another client.

Also, do noobs need an annoying away system which spams every single channel their in with an action (using “/me”) when they go /away, come back, or are highlighted? I don’t think so… That’s what /whois is for!!

Another annoying habit is for noobs to load a system stats script (or a lame script to bundle one inside), and then not change any of the settings, so if you send a VERSION request to that user, you’ll end up with between two and four replies! One from mIRC, one from any lame scripts their running, and one from the System Stats thing, with all their OS/CPU/RAM/HDD info in.

There will come a point where I start banning every user of these damn scripts from any channel where I have +o or higher… and it’s coming quickly.
