Two Important Notes:

  • This is a beta, so I’ve set it to expire in July (just to stop people from using old code that could (but hopefully won’t) contain bugs).
  • You will require a license to use this, as WindowClippings doesn’t allow unregistered users to use add-ins.
  • Update: The current (and newer) versions of WindowClippings no longer require licenses to use add-ins!


To save me rewriting it, I’ve taken this from the readme file I wrote earlier:

ActionFTP is a “Send To” add-in: it takes the processed clipping (after any extra “Filter” add-ins have done their stuff), saves a copy to your “temp” folder, and then opens it for editing/annotating/etc in a program of your choice (eg. Photoshop, Paint.Net, The GIMP), before automatically uploading it to any FTP server of your choice, and then copying the direct web-facing URL to the new clipping to your clipboard.

ActionFTP shares a number of features and similarities with Ari Glaizel’s “Send to FTP” add-in, which I used for months before developing ActionFTP. If you’re used to “Send to FTP”, you should find ActionFTP very familiar! :-)

Installation instructions and some other notes are in the “README.txt” file, so it might be worth a quick read ;-)

Please feel free to suggest any changes or report any problems you encounter using the comments form below.

If you receive the following error message: “The addin failed to register”, it’s likely that the WindowClippings.exe and/or WindowClippings.dll file is an old version.

Update: By request, I’ve added a Yes/No prompt before opening the .exe you specify - very useful if you want to quickly upload a basic clipping and have no need to wait for Photoshop/etc to open :)

It seems far easier and much quicker to keep updated, as (unlike with a blog) I don’t feel I have to write a long post about whatever it is I’m writing about - in fact it limits each "tweet" (the act of sending an update to Twitter) to 140 characters. If your friends/colleagues use Twitter as well, you can "follow" them, which puts all their "tweets" (as well as yours) on one central page for you to keep track of all of them at once.

There are also a vast amount of ways to "tweet" to Twitter - there are huge numbers of GUI clients for Windows, Mac OS (MoodBlast is a good one, and can also update various other sites/statuses at the same time) and Linux, as well as CLI clients for Mac and Linux, add-on/plugin clients for Firefox (my personal favourite is TwitterFox) and other similar apps, and iPhone/iPod Touch (I use Twinkle) applications too. You can also "tweet" on the actual Twitter website, or even using an SMS from your mobile phone!

I’ve added a link to my Twitter to the sidebar, and I may add a small widget to the sidebar as well to show my latest "tweets" at some point.

I jumped on the downloads (Installer DVDs of 32bit and 64bit) as soon as I could, burnt the 64bit DVD, and rebooted, hoping to have it installed within half an hour.

I already had 10GB of empty space at the start of one of my 750GB drives in preparation - all I had to do was tell the BIOS to boot the DVD and install it!

Well, that was the idea… If only it was that easy… Linux is never (at least in my experience) that obedient :(

I got into the second step of the installer (the first is chosing the language), where it asks you to chose your keyboard layout/language. I picked “United Kingdom”, and clicked “Next”… and the whole installer (minus the mouse cursor) froze. I assumed it was processing something, and waited a couple minutes… no change. CTRL+ALT+F1-8 did nothing (normally they’d switch to other terminals/logs). CTRL+ALT+Backspace did nothing. CTRL+ALT+Del did nothing! I lost my patience at that point and pressed the reset button…

I rebooted and tried again: same error. I rebooted and tried the default “US - English” layout: again, same error. I rebooted yet again, and tried the text-only installer… I’m sure you can guess what happened when it asked me my keyboard layout… Yup, it did it again.

I have now given up with trying to install it, at least for - I might try it again in VMware, or burn the 32bit DVD (or perhaps a 64bit LiveDVD, if there is one) and try that instead, once I can find a bit of spare time.

The entire dashboard has been redesigned and is far easier to navigate, looks nicer, and is much less buggy or “quirky” than before. Ozh’s drop-down menu plugin is a nice addition to it though.
